Title: Total Files
Post by: kamranrocksit on August 05, 2008, 02:15:01 AM
Hi

My plan allows total of 50,000 files to be saved. Right now it shows 49909 files being used under my Account Usage ,
If i go to add services, i dont see any option where i can get more files storage.

I think my account is goona run out of files. What options do I have?
It says 91 files available for now.

Thanks for helping me out

Edit:deleted some files, back to 1k

As far as I know you cannot upgrade the number of files for your account.

Sorry you can't upgrade the number of files for your account. Reduce the files is the only option.

Omg I never noticed that before. Why on earth would the number of files be limited!!!!!?????

It sounds like a technique to prevent the user from using their maximum disk space?

A large number of files will degrade overall system performance.

All file systems use some form of a master file table (even if not by that name) which contains the details for each file, and its location. Larger MFT = slower server.

Imagine the MFT like a big library. You need to find one file (book). If you have millions of books in the library it will take you longer to find what you need.

There may also be other restrictions (server/software specific) that causes the limit in this case.

Yes yes I have heard this argument before.

However I think I have the real reason.

Obviously every other company that uses the Supreme Control Panel has this problem.

The server use ext3 file system.
The maximum number of inodes (and hence the maximum number of files and directories) is set when the file system is created. If V is the volume size in bytes, then the default number of inodes is given by V/2^13 (or the number of blocks, whichever is less), and the minimum by V/2^23. The default was deemed sufficient for most applications. The max number of subdirectories in one directory is fixed to 32000.

Do you think that limited number of files in the system can allow unlimited files number for users ?
Is it not connected with our paid hosting system trick, it is just hardware limitation of disk space and number of allowed users in the system.

Perhaps other hosts just don't tell you. Or go on the hope that they wont ever reach the limit.

I could not find any evidence to suggest a company called Dreamhost doing this, and they offer 500GB.

If they offer 500GB per account then you can expect less accounts per disk.

But there will be a limit even if they do not impose it on a per account basis.

Title: Cpu Load
Post by: kamranrocksit on August 08, 2008, 11:44:24 PM
Here is my screenshot of cpuload for this month

At the start of this month, my site started getting a lot of traffic and i found out the cpu load has increased too, and my account gets blocked every 2-3 days.
I was wondering does traffic has anything to do with load? Can i decrease the load. if so what steps should i take?

Yes, it depends from your server side script code optimization. Optimize the code please to reduce the CPU usage.

I am using wordpress, I dont think i can do anything further..although support suggested me to use robots.txt to block the bots from accessing my file and that might stop the load.

Additionally, any pages that aren't using server side scripts that still have the .php extension should be renamed as .html so that they arent parsed by php.
