I will tackle installing phpBB3 forum for the first time. Although I am expecting to run into issues and problems I would like to make as smooth as possible.

phpBB3 has a few requirements which must be met before you are able to install and use it.

    * A webserver or web hosting account running on any major Operating System with support for PHP (CHECKED)
    * A SQL database system, one of:
o MySQL 3.23 or above (MySQLi supported) (?)
          o PostgreSQL 7.3+ (?)
          o SQLite 2.8.2+ (?)
          o Firebird 2.0+ (?)
o MS SQL Server 2000 or above (directly or via ODBC) (?)
          o Oracle
    * PHP 4.3.3+ (>=4.3.3, >4.4.x, >5.x.x, >6.0-dev (compatible)) with support for the database you intend to use. (CHECKED, enabled)
    * getimagesize() function need to be enabled. (?)

These optional presence of the following modules within PHP will provide access to additional features, but they are not required.
          o zlib Compression support (?)
          o Remote FTP support (CHECKED)
          o XML support (?)
          o Imagemagick support (?)
          o GD Support (?)

I did search the forums but did not find anything about phpBB3. I found info on BB2.

If you know someone or if you are using phpBB3 with 50webs paid hosting then just let me know that it works. I just would like to know if it is working for you and if there are any changes to the defaults that I should use.

(Edit)
There are also database requirements such as
    * The Database Type - the database you will be using.
    * The Database server hostname or DSN - the address of the database server.
    * The Database server port - the port of the database server (most of the time this is not needed).
    * The Database name - the name of the database on the server.
    * The Database username and Database password - the login data to access the database.

I went to MySQL Databases and created a database snowonweb_xxxxx
also created password for it so I am assuming The Database name and Database username are the same. Database type will be SQL.
What is database server hostname or DSN? Will that be my domain name such as www.xxxxx.com?

Sorry for the inconvenience but I would rather post it in forum than open a ticket. So that way it may help others in the future. (End Edit)

Please advice,
Jack

Thanks for quick reply
I am assuming you created a mySQL database as I did. One thing is that I haven't noticed an option for the domain name.
My question is then. How is database linked to a domain name?

I am going to go ahead now and do the installation right now then Smiley

What is the proper Database server hostname? is it 50webs.net or is it my domain?

the database can be accessed by any domain/subdomain in ure account and isnt linked directly to one.

That's why I like 50webs.com. Quick replies with no flaming.

Forum installed correctly and seems to work fine. Now I am educating myself on either running forum as subdomain or as folder.

Also I uploaded the whole phpbb3.zip file through File Manager but it didn't extract the files for some reason. I am suspecting that perhaps one of the files within the ZIP file exceeds the file size req. ZIP file itself is only 2.15 MB. Either way I am using FileZilla (works like a charm) to upload all the files from the ZIP that I extracted locally on HD.

Thank You for your help

The paid plan filemanager doesnt extract zip files for you automatically.

If you want to extract a zip file create a simple .php file as below

Code:
<?php

shell_exec
('unzip filename.zip');

?>

Simply change the filename to match and open up the php file in your browser.

[/code]

for some reason, the php mail function is not working well, I believe the html header and spam filter 50Webs using, but I recommend you use "SMTP" enable option because it's real fast, php mail funtion might take 2 - 20 minutes or longer to send email, but SMTP option you will get email within 10 seconds...

SMTP server: mail.50webs.net
SMTP Usernam: your@yourdmain.com ex. admin[at]sawanbanna.com etc..
SMTP password: your email password

- Setup in Admin CP > "General" tab
- "Client Communications" > "E-mail Settings"

I have tested almost every option available on phpbb3 as well as offer the free custom designs on eXtreme Templates website, the demo site can be found at http://test.sawanbanna.com/phpbb3/ we have designed 2 custom templates for members already...
