Do I have to use the File Manager or can I upload directly using my web publishing program?

You can configure your program to upload via the FTP service.

Example configuration for yourwebsite.50webs.com

FTP Host: yourwebsite.50webs.com
Home Path: /yourwebsite.50webs.com/
User: 50webs username
Pass: 50webs password

Example configuration for yourwebsite.com

FTP Host: yourwebsite.com
Home Path: /yourwebsite.com/
User: 50webs username
Pass: 50webs password

such as yourwebsite.50webs.com

In this example (based on your profile) the FTP host would be floorsbygoss.com
