I was trying to install an HP printer and was having difficulties. One of the suggested tips by HP was to change the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation settings from 2 to 0 in regedit. For whatever the reason, this worked to install the printer. However, as soon as I did that everything from my desktop except a few shortcuts disappeared. They are still "there" because if I go to create a new shortcut for the disappeared items it says there is an existing shortcut and then renames it (2). They are just not showing up. If I search for the file names, they show up as weblinks. I have reverted NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation back to what it was (0), but the problem persists. I have recovered an older version of the desktop, and everything is still there. But as soon as I try to put them on the desktop they similarly vanish. Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Please help.
I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
